How to Build a More Durable Nonstick Bakeware Program

Questions about peeling or worn nonstick coatings are common in home-baking communities. For a brand or retailer, the response should start much earlier: with the product brief, manufacturing program and care communication.

Durability is a system, not one coating name

A useful bakeware specification defines the substrate, thickness, formed geometry, pretreatment, coating family, edge coverage and intended use together. A coating cannot compensate for a pan that is damaged in forming, poorly protected in transit or used outside the intended care guidance.

What to specify before sampling

  • Product construction: material, nominal thickness, shape, rim, corners and flatness requirements.
  • Surface program: visual target, internal and external finish, areas requiring full coverage and acceptable cosmetic limits.
  • Use and care: intended oven range, cleaning guidance, utensil guidance and packaging copy for the destination market.
  • Quality plan: sample approval criteria for appearance, adhesion-related tests where applicable, transit protection and production inspection.

Pay attention to formed edges and handling

Rims, corners, embossed areas and formed edges deserve special attention because they are frequently handled and can be vulnerable to abrasion. Packaging design should prevent pan-to-pan contact and protect visible surfaces during transport and retail handling.

Do not make broad compliance claims without project validation

Documentation and performance requirements depend on the selected product, coating system, factory program and destination market. Discuss the market before sampling, then confirm what documentation and testing are applicable to the approved program.
